Katie Richarme | Owner The Dancing Rabbit Gallery
We made a big decision to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the middle of a pandemic in October 2020. Our timing was very interesting, and a little crazy, but it worked out quite well. We had been coming to Santa Fe from Texas eight times a year to buy material and see our artists, so we decided to pick up and move lock, stock and barrel. Once here it was gorgeous to wake up to these sunrises.
Winter was certainly tough in New Mexico, but we were prepared to support our artists as they were preserving their cultures. Like many galleries in Santa Fe, we bought more artwork than we normally would have—anything to support these artists. It was a tight economy, but things were looking up, and even now things are improving every day. We’re very excited about some shows we have coming up, and we can’t wait to show some of the materials we have to our clients.
One of the things that really helped us was social media. It played a big role with our artists and customers, and we saw increased sales as people have started buying art again. The third and fourth quarter of last year were soft in sales, but in the first quarter of 2021 sales have greatly increased. The market during the pandemic this past year was uneven in that higher-quality artworks sold more readily than lower-quality items.
Online has shown great success for us, but we can’t wait to see our friends and start attending events again. The cultural events are a big reason to live in Santa Fe, so we miss them and everything that came with them.
